Lab architecture studio designed the Federation Square civic complex in Melbourne, Australia. Completed in 2003, the project includes retail space, the National Gallery of Victoria's collection of Australian art, a visitor's centre, a glass walled theatre, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), SBS (Australia's multi-cultural broadcaster), and various restaurants.
Floor plans and walls are arranged from a uniform grid, contorted by spacial needs and interesting dynamic ideas. Triangular glass panels on some faces are arranged around sandstone and zinc cladding materials.
The result is a somewhat organic structure with fractured connections and very dynamic forms.
