GSW Headquarters, Berlin Germany

Fragments of old Germany unite together in this renovation of the Gemeinnützige Siedlungs und Wohnbaugenossenschaft GSW Hauptverwaltung in Berlin by Sauerbruch Hutton Architekten, completed in 1999.

The 22 floor structure has a double thermal skin system with operable windows. Elements of the DDR's Eastern German drab block buildings can be seen in the repetition while color and gentle curves indicate a contemporary response to urban context. Passive strategies for sun screening, air cross ventilation, thermal storage, and stack heating make this one of Germany's most innovative green buildings.
