Pinacotheca of the State of São Paulo, Brazil

Ramos de Azevedo and Domiziano Rossi designed the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo in Sao Paulo, Brazil, originally completed in 1905. Paulo Mendes da Rocha updated the design recently with minimalist modernity. Contemporary and 19th century Brazilian art is displayed near 19th century European painting and sculpture.

The museum is one of Brazil's largest and most vibrant.

By lightly adding clear alterations of steel and glass, da Rocha highlights the austere beauty of the old brick structure. The art finds a welcome home in a spirited building that is well loved and taken care of.
