Why: I'm filing important documents. I'm aware of Manila, Philippines, and my Nilla Wafers, but no manila paper.

Answer: A type of fiber! Manila hemp comes from abaca, a relative of the banana plant. It is - doy - native to the Philippines and was first introduced to the West in the 1800s.
Until synthetic alternatives were invented, abaca was the primary material used to make marine ropes because of its strength, water-resistance, and light weight. Those qualities also make it ideal for durable paper products like currency notes, tea bags, vacuum bags, and office folders.
