Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao Spain

Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum Bilbao ignited an architectural craze when it was completed in 1997. Called by Philip Johnson "the greatest building of our time," the sculpted assembly of expressive elements revolutionized the role of architecture. The economic excess suggested in this project diminished in the following decade but the role of expressive space and form continues to be Deconstructed in buildings to today.

Computer simulations derived from aerial software made possible a new kind of organic monumental structure. Gehry's tiresome use of curvaceous metal facades tends to overburden its context, most notably with his Experience the Music project, but monumental buildings like the Guggenheim and Disney concert hall are meant to stand out.

The abstraction of a ship in this port town gives permanence to the city's cultural heritage while giving it an electrifying image. The clash of material and form produces fascinating spaces and relationships of spaces. Form is derived through construction and deconstruction through iterations. The result is a strong icon and poor public space; the image of an economic bubble and cultural fad.
