Olson Kundig architects renovated the historic St. Mark's Episcopal church in Seattle. After construction began the original plan never came to fruition due to the Great Depression. The church's prominant location atop the waterside's hill provided an opportunity to give a sense of authority and permanence for the community. Christian imagery was abstracted through the interior with translucent shading panels controlling daylight and layers of transparency controlling the front focal point behind the altar. A 21ft circular window on this western wall was inspired by the Celtic cross. The interior facade on this wall reaches 57ft high and carefully manipulates light like a cathedral's rose window.
These layers of functional interior facades added through the years give a visually interesting and audibly resonate volume of space.
