David Chipperfield designed the Turner Contemporary gallery in Margate UK, completed in April 2011. Snøhetta was the original architect but their plans were scrapped after the location and cost were criticized. It was moved away from the harbor and the coast was lowered to £17.5 million. The steel structure was originally concrete.Chipperfield's flare for lighting and metal textures come out in this design. It stands atop a tall concrete foundation and plinth in case of flooding. Six angled rectangular blocks come together and gesture to the northern sky. Opaque glass etched in acid is highly reflective and glaring in the historic context. Double-height spaces and cantilevered structure dramatacizes these spaces.
