Kraanspoor, Amsterdam Netherlands
Ontwerpgroep Trude Hooykaas bv OTHL designed the Kraanspoor office building in Amsterdam, completed in 2007.
This project reused an old shipyard, preserving its crane structure as a monument to the city's industrial history. The glass box hovers over the bulky steel structure with a series of 3m columns. Motorized sun louvres and a double-skin facade system keep good environmental control, and pre-existing stairways lead to the magnificent addition.
This piece of modern Minimalism maximizes the space allotted by the crane structure. It is respectfully hoisted above the foundation of a historic structure, without any pretentious mimicry or overbearance.
