Winner of the 2009 International Architect Award, Randall Stout designed the Taubman Museum, formerly the Museum of Western Virginia, in downtown Roanoke. The relocation was completed in 2008.

Much like inspiration for Libeskind's Denver Museum, this museum layers its materials that emerge like the nearby Appalachian Mountains. Located on a prominent gateway into the city, the building symbolizes the evolution from industrial to technology. The museum houses 19th and early 20th century American art, the age of America's emergence.

The contrast couldn't be greater, great sections of stainless steel versus glazed sections. It's a structure that is very man-made yet inspired from nature and striving for self-sustainability. The form also draws from historic buildings, such as the trainyard. Can this architecture really move the city forward as a museum for the past?
