On Friday, July 30, academy award winner Susan Sarandon spoke movingly about the launch of a new campaign sponsored by The Body Shop®, ECPAT (End Child Prostitution and Trafficking), and Somaly Mam Foundation intended to assist child victims of sex trafficking. Beyond raising public awareness about this severely underreported issue, the primary purpose of Friday’s launch at the Morgans Hotel Penthouse (the proprietor of the property informed me that they had offered to host the event in the penthouse free of charge), was the announcement of a petition that “will encourage Americans to lend their signatures to help lobby for ‘Safe Harbor’ laws, protecting victims of sex trafficking from being prosecuted for prostitution.”
