Wtf was going on on the 110 South this morning?

Search
: 110 traffic chase

Why: We were at a dead stop for a good half hour, and then I saw !3! helicopters hovering over the road way in front in me. I was all, "Where, in Kuwait?!"
Eventually, some policepeople laid down flairs to direct cars to a very crowded exit. The road behind them was free and open for as far as the eye could see:
Answer: High! speed! chase! High! speed! chase!

Los Angeles Police have closed the southbound 110 Freeway after suspects in a high-speed pursuit reportedly tossed rounds of ammunition out of their vehicle Friday morning.

The entire southbound 110 Freeway has been shut down from the 10 Freeway to the 105 Freeway, while police search the area looking for evidence.

Police arrested the three assault suspects after chasing their van to the area of Main Street, just south of the Gardena (91) Freeway in Carson.

I was part of history today!

The More You Know: Speaking of the 110, I see this one girl almost every night on the way home from work, and then she was driving next to me this morning, too. She's in a creamy colored "new Bug" convertible and has the brightest blonde hair the world has ever seen.
I realize we probably have similar schedules and commutes, but in a city of 15 million people, it's still creepy. If you know this girl, please let her know that she's making me feel like I'm in a David Lynch movie.

Who sings the song in the Chevy Traverse commercial?

Search
: it's raining but i love the rain

Why: I always want the lyrics to be "I walk the line."

Answer: A band called The Real Tuesday Weld! It's called "I Love the Rain." Buy it here on iTunes - the one you want is on the album Where Psyche Meets Cupid.
Lyrics go like:
It's raining
It's pouring
But I ain't complaining
'Cause I love the rain
Source: YouTube

The More You Know: Do you know who Tuesday Weld is? She is kind of the only reason I bothered to blog this. I first Googled her after I saw Once Upon a Time in America - one of my favorite movies ever - but I later saw her play jaded Maria in the adaptation of Joan Didion's Play It As It Lays, which is a pretty good book that I had to read for grad school. She was also in a movie called I Walk the Line. WHAT!
She was born Aug. 27, 1943, which was exactly 4 years before my dad's birthday.

Why do people in various countries drive on different sides of the road?

Search
: why do we drive on the right; why do we drive on different sides

Why: Matt asked, and we wondered if our right-ness was just because we were rebelling against the British. I thought maybe it was because more people are right-handed than are loyal leftists.

Answer: Well, the left-hand-side thing originally comes from the days of riding horses and swinging swords. If you are right-handed (which most people are), you want to hold the horse reins in your left hand and keep your sword in your right. You also want people to pass you on your right so you can stab them with ease. This means you - and they - stay to the left. The Romans did this, and around 1300, Pope Boneface (Boneface?) issued a Papal Edict to his pilgrims to stay to the left.

(Although here is another theory:
Chinese bureaucracy of 1100 B.C. The Book of Rites stated: "The right side of the road is for men, the left side for women and the center for carriages." This Western Zhou dynasty rule applied only to the dynasty's wide official roads and was "more concerned with protocol than avoiding head-on collisions."
Lul.)

Nothing changed for a long time. Here is some theory about the beginning of traveling on the right, but I don't know:
Reasons to travel on the right are less clear, but the generally accepted version of history is as follows: The French, being Catholics, followed Pope Boneface's edict, but in the buildup to the French Revolution in 1790, the French Aristorcracy drove their carriages at great speed on the left hand side of the road, forcing the peasantry over to the right side for their own safety. Come the Revolution, instincts of self-preservation resulted in the remains of the Aristocracy joining the peasants on the right hand side of the road. The first official record of this was a keep-right rule introduced in Paris in 1794.
Meanwhile, an increase in horse traffic led the UK government to introduce a keep-left recommendation as part of the General Highways Act of 1773, and to make it into law in the Highways Bill of 1835.

The rest of the world was influenced by imperial expansion:
  • Australasia followed Britain's keep-left rule.
  • Africa was mostly keep-left - although many African countries changed to the right when they became independent.
  • India was keep-left.
  • The Japanese opened their ports to the British in the 1850s. Sir Rutherford Alcock persuaded them to keep left.
  • France's keep-right rule spread through much of modern day Europe and to colonies like Egypt
  • French General Lafayette recommended the keep-right rule to the US as he helped them prepare for the American Revolution. The first reference to a keep-right rule in the US is in a law regarding the turnpike from Lancaster to Philadelphia in 1792.
In case you were wondering, the driver usually sat on the inside so he could keep a closer eye on the clearing coming toward him. Later, however - like during the Civil War - drivers sat on the outside to ensure that their wheels didn't fall into the deep ditches on the sides of the road.

But then we stopped riding horses and carrying swords (or whips, if you were driving a buggy, or just guns).

When inventors began building "automobiles" in the 1890's, they thought of them as motorized wagons. As a result, many early cars had the steering mechanism-a rudder (or tiller), not a wheel-in the center position where the side of the road didn't make any difference. Lay points out that technical innovation created the configuration we are familiar with in the United States:

However, with the introduction of the steering wheel in 1898, a central location was no longer technically possible. Car makers usually copied existing practice and placed the driver on the curbside. Thus, most American cars produced before 1910 were made with right-side driver seating, although intended for right-side driving. Such vehicles remained in common use until 1915, and the 1908 Model T was the first of Ford's cars to feature a left-side driving position.

By 1915, the Model T had become so popular that the rest of the automakers followed Ford's lead.

The More You Know: But why is the steering wheel of a boat on the right instead of the left? Why do boats in England stay to the right? Why? It's at the bottom of this page.

What's the song in the Honda CR-Z Sport Hybrid commercial?

Search
: hybrid sleigh bells

Why: I am rewatching Sharktopus, and it's all up in there.
Answer: "Riot Rhythm" by Sleigh Bells!

I won't lie to you - the truth is that I already knew it was them. In fact, I listened to their album Treats both last night and this morning. It took some getting used to (in June, I told Ashley it was too noisy), but it's pretty good!
Source: Paste Magazine

The More You Know: I thought Sleigh Bells was a bunch of girls, but turns out it is just 2 peeps: Derek E. Miller (songwriter, guitarist, producer) and Alexis Krauss (vocals). Here is probably my favorite song from that record, "Rill Rill":
Keep thinking about every straight face yes
Wonder what your boyfriend thinks about your braces

I want to see pictures of Al Capone's car

Search
: al capone car

Why
: According to "16 Things You Didn't Know About Automobiles" (by the guy from The Oatmeal [or The Oatmeal himself; I'm not sure if that's the name of his site or himself]):
When Al Capone was convicted of tax evasion, his armor-plated limo was seized by the Treasury Department. The day after the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt rode that same limo to Congress to read his declaration of war.
Answer
: The 1928 341A Cadillac Town Sedan was green with black fenders - just like the ones driven by Chicago police and officials, wink. Lookin fancy!
It had 3,000 pounds of bullet-proof armor beneath the standard body. Its windshield and windows were made of recently developed inch thick bullet proof glass. The car also had flashing red lights behind the grille and a real police siren. It is also believed to have been the first private car with a police band receiver.
What a scamp.
Roosevelt used Capone’s car until 1942, when Ford armored a 1939 Lincoln convertible limousine the president nicknamed the “Sunshine Special.”
FDR had a snappy response when someone told him where his new car came from: “I hope Mr. Capone won’t mind.”

Why do Priuses have those yellow stickers?

Search
: prius yellow sticker; prius incentives

Why
: We were talking about them the other day. Maybe they mean you don't have to put money in parking meters?

Answer
: First, they look like this:
And they mean you can drive in the carpool lane all by yourself - at least in California - but only until January 1, 2011. In LA and San Jose, you also don't have to pay for street parking. In New York, you can get a "green" version of the E-ZPass, and
the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey offers their "green E-ZPass" to hybrid owners, who pay $4 instead of $8 to use all the bridges and tunnels between New York and New Jersey, except in rush hours.
What?

Source: Wikipedia

The More You Know: But they're gone soon:
In California, 85,000 owners of the Toyota Prius and two other hybrids were granted special stickers providing access to High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes, even with a single occupant in the car. That all ends on January 1st.

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill yesterday extending certain HOV-Lane Access stickers for four more years. The yellow HOV stickers slapped to the sides of 85,000 hybrid vehicles weren't included in the extension. That means that when they expire on December 31st, it's sayonara to the smug-smile-inducing privilege.

Instead, Schwarzenegger extended the expiration on stickers plastered on a group of green vehicles that are far less common: Electric cars like the Tesla Roadster and those that run on natural gas like the Honda Civic GX or hydrogen — like the rarer-than-a-fillet 2010 Honda FCX Clarity.

What is a jalopy?

Search
: jalopie; jalopy origin

Why: On the SNL sketch "New Car Horns (by Tina Tina)," the old-timey horns goes, "Aawoooga, jalopy. What?"
Answer: It's just an old-ass car! Theories of origin:
  • from the Yiddish word shlappe, a term for an old horse (actually Polish)
  • from the French word chaloupe, a kind of skiff - which is a boat, not a car
  • from the Italian-American pronunciation of "jelly apple" - the jell-oppy, "one of the decrepit old carts from which Italian immigrants sold this delicacy during the early part of the 20th century..."
  • from Spanish galapago, i.e. one of those big slow tortoises (galapago means "saddle," btw)
And this:
A theory is that it is derived from a non-Spanish pronunciation of Jalapa, Mexico. It seems that, during the 1920s, many decrepit automobiles were shipped from New Orleans to scrapyards in Jalapa. The theory is that some of the dockhands or crew members who did not speak English began naming these broken-down autos after their destination, and the name eventually morphed into our current jalopy.
Other words for shitty cars: flivver (1910), heap, tin lizzy (1915), crate (1927), bucket, beater, hooptie (1990), and clunker (2009).
