Zaha Hadid Architects designed the MAXXI Museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXI Secolo in Rome, Italy, completed in 2009. Intertwining streams of lines flow through horizontal and vertical spaces, bringing together a variety of buildings. Galleries intermix with bookshops, auditoriums, gathering spaces, cafeteria, and library.
A variety of materials extrude into planes and flow through and past each other, with a careful eye for natural lighting. This also gives some wonderful opportunities for exterior spaces and connections to the historic urban environment. This project won the 2010 RIBA Stirling Prize.
