The Slut Walk

The Slut Walk
The SlutWalk protest marches began on April 3, 2011 in Toronto, Canada and became a movement of rallies across the world.Participants protest against explaining or excusing rape by referring to any aspect of a woman's appearance. The rallies began when Constable Michael Sanguinetti, a Toronto Police officer, suggested that to remain safe, "women should avoid dressing like sluts."The protest take the form of a march, mainly by young women, where some dress in ordinary clothing and others dress provocatively, like "sluts." There are also speaker meetings and workshops. Some objectors have remarked that this approach is an example of women defining their sexuality in male terms.

Delhi will next month host the country's first Slut Walk, renamed Besharmi Morcha for India.

1. What's The Aim?

The aim of this walk is to protest sexual violence against women, on the pretext that they dressed provocatively, and hence, 'asked for it'.

2. Where Did It Come From?
But India's slut walk is an offshoot of a movement that has turned into a rage worldwide. Toronto It was a policeman in Toronto who said during a speech to university students that women should avoid 'dressing like sluts' in order not to be victimised.

3. And Then...
Outraged, the women decided to show through street parades that dressing provocatively is no reason for them to be at the receiving end of sexual violence.

4. Spark !
That statement sparked off the movement. Similar parades were then held in different parts of the world like Rio de Janeiro and London.

5. What's The Message?
The movement Slut Walk is trying to convey that no matter what a woman wears, it does not mean she wants to be leered at, molested or raped.

6. And In Delhi...
Delhi, notoriously known as the 'Rape capital of India' where women feel unsafe enough not to venture out sometimes even as early as nine in the evening, will be hosting the walk on July 24.
