Top 10: First Date Conversation Tips

Top 10: First Date Conversation Tips
Make sure that what you say on a first date sounds like music to her ears, not screeching brakes. Though what she wants you to say depends on the situation, you can always alter these suggestions to suit your circumstances.

#10.  “How did that start?”
Taking an interest in her life, job or anything else that she likes to talk about is a must for first date conversations. Yes, women like to talk about themselves, but they also want the guy to show genuine interest in what they’re saying to gain a bigger picture of who they are. You can do that by asking questions like, “How did your job/hobby/interest start?”

#9.  "One of my dreams is to…”
Contrary to popular opinion, women don’t only want to talk about themselves; they also want to see what’s going on with you. When it comes to dreams, expressing yours will make her gain some interesting insight into you, and she’ll love that you can open up to her.

#8.  “My friend was telling me about…”
Throwing in a word about your friend and something interesting he said or did will show your date that you have some awesome mates. Just make sure you don’t fall into the trap of going on and on about your friends to the point where you are taking focus away from your date.

#7.  “Ha ha ha!”
Our next first date conversation tip is as simple as it gets. The sound of your laughter is always something she wants to hear. It shows her that she has a great sense of humor and you find her delightful. Just try not to overdo it, and always keep it genuine. After all, if you make a non-funny woman tell jokes on your first date, she’s going to be throwing out the “funny” quips on future dates. Not fun for your ears.

#6.  “This reminds me of when I…”
Sometimes the best way to get to know someone is through personal anecdotes. So go on and share an experience that stands out as a great memory.

#5.  “I had a really good time.”
By the end of the first date, there’s often an awkwardness that descends, with both parties not knowing if the other had a fun time or not. If you had a good time with her, then tell her. She will really appreciate hearing it, and it will save her from having to dissect the date’s occurrences with her girlfriends later.

#4.  “Have you ever been to…?”
Of course you don’t know if she had a fun time, but you can set a platform for a future date without seeming pushy. For instance, mention a great sushi bar or Italian restaurant you’ve dined at recently, and ask her if she’s been there. This is a casual way of sussing out if a second date is on the cards and showing her you’re interested (plus, it’s an easy way to bring up other topics, like a restaurant you enjoy, which makes for natural first-date conversation).

#3.  “I’ll give you a call.”
As the guy, it’s up to you to take the courtship by the horns. But telling her you’ll give her a call doesn’t always ring true. After all, she can probably list many instances where the guy said he’ll call but didn’t. However, it’s still nice to tell her that you’ll phone her. Just make sure you really mean it and that you actually do call her.

#2.  “I’m really into…”
It’s good to let her know a bit more about yourself. She’ll love to hear about your interests, favorite getaways and hobbies. Divulging information about yourself enables you both to see if you’re on the same wavelength. Plus, she’ll love that you’re offering some info about yourself without her having to ask all the questions.

#1.  “Can I have the bill?”
There’s nothing wrong with going Dutch on a first date, but it’s really the gentlemanly thing to pick up the bill for her. When she reaches into her purse, tell her that you have it covered. If you find the situation awkward, you could always be discreet by handing over your credit card in advance. She’ll be impressed that you took the effort for her and your chivalry will increase your chances of a second date.
