Atomium, Brussels Belgium

André Waterkeyn designed the Atomium monument for the 1958 World Expo in Brussels. It celebrated recent advancement in scientific understanding by mimicking atomic iron structural models. Nine steel spheres are connected with steel tubes through which escalators run. Each sphere has an 18m diameter, and the top sphere, at a height of 102m, provides a panoramic view of the city. The project was saved from destruction upon the close of the world fair and underwent renovation in 2004. Additions provide education about recent scientific advancements.

Belgium recently banned United States websites from having images of the landmark, claiming copyright. Atomium's website states that images of the structure may not be displayed unless it is for "private websites for no commercial purpose." Belgium futher charged high prices for old pieces of the structure, another scheme to stinge money out of the old structure.
