Grand Canal Square, Dublin Ireland

Daniel Libeskind designed Grand Canal Square theatre and commercial development in Dublin, Ireland. The project includes office and retail space with a 2,000 seat performance center crossing through the center. Libeskind's characteristic angles portrude gently into the surrounds, and become more pronounced as one proceeds into the centre square.

The use of glazing and metal materials gives connections in the spaces, with a colorful lighting scheme for the night time. It is a very dynamic space that aims to bring renewed energy into this old city. He uses traditional design concepts for the piazza with descriptive language of modern materials. The influence of nature from the coast is another interesting point of notice, as green glow highlights natural grass and angled pathways accent the soft rolling topography. Martha Schwartz Partners deserve credit for some amazing landscaping.
