MIT Chapel, Cambridge Massachusetts

Eero Saarinen designed the non-denominational chapel at the the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, completed in 1955. A simple circular skylight emits celestial light into the heavy brick, circular building. Like other Modernist buildings, a light moat surrounds the heavy structure. The water feature also subtly brings soft sunlight into the interior through stained-glass windows. White floors in the 50 ft diameter interior are composed carefully with wood furniture and Saarinen's famous curved brick. The metal strands falling from the skylight was created by artist Harry Bertoia. It is a masterpiece of lighting.
