Mart de Jong and Architectenbureau De Vijf designed the new overflow dormitory for Utrecht University using shipping containers. The variety of color adds a huge spark of interest, and the ends or folded inwards toward a large window face. The individual character and cultural relevance to the university is stunning. The rectangular boxes stack tilted, adding further interest.
The checkered pattern relates to the Marlies Rohmer student housing completed in 2008, with multicolored rectangles busying up the four sides. These each relate to the quicker Faculteit Educatie Hogeschool Utrecht by Ector Hoogstad.
