Esplanade Theatres, Singapore

The Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay 滨海艺术中心- lies along the Marina Bay of the Singapore River. It contains a concert hall, theater, library, and shopping mall. It was designed by DP Architects and Michael Wilford & Partners, completed in 2002.

Small aluminum sun-shading devices cover glass cases over the theaters, which tilt toward each other. Movable canopies help acoustics in the concave envelope. The Esplanade takes advantage of views towards the water, as with other musical venues around the world. The project has been locally criticized as a national symbol of unity, as it borrows themes from the West and isn't sensitive to uniting Singapore's culture.
