Shin Takamatsu designed the Ueda Shoji Museum of Photography 植田正治写真美術館 near the town of Houki. It exhibits photography by Shoji Ueda, and opened in 1995.

Ueda's monochromatic style and love for bleak landscapes is reflected in the brutal concrete exterior. His figures often stand as monoliths above the horizon line. The overall form seems to quite literally mimick Ueda's first famous image Four Postures of the Girl.

The slits between this looming blocks frame views of Mount Daisen, the most dominant figure in the landscape. The building's water element below reflects the snow cap and heaven's above, a very tidy composition. This theme of gridded swaths of water, windows, and mass come together in a subtle but compelling edifice.
