Tamagawa Takashimaya 玉川高島屋 is Japan's first shopping center, opening in 1969. This recent south building stands near the Futako-Tamagawa Station in Tokyo. It was designed by Tadasu Ohe with Plantec Architects and opened in 2004.

The site was once the home of Tokugawa family in Mito, and still seeks nature and peaceful quiet despite the dense urban context of Tamagawa. Rooftop gardens and modern design of nature add a sophisticated and meditative quality to the project. Layered transparencies, streamlined lighting, nature, and bare structure create a very different shopping experience.
